Margaret Ann Franklin's visit to the Great Northern Carousel in Helena Montana
Great Northern Carousel, Helena Montana This is one of my favorites! Yeah, I know, I must say that about every carousel I visit. Helenawas where we spent the night at this particular convention, after having seen the one in Missoula. It is a community project with all new carvings by various artists. Most of these are indigenous wildlife including a wolf, otters, frogs, bison, big-horned sheep...I rode practically everything EXCEPT horses on this carousel even though they had horses too, of course. I rode just about every creature from the wonderful cut-throat trout to a TRICERATOPS!
The Helena carousel moves at a fair clip, requiring the riders to wear seat belts, since it has a ring machine, like the previous two we rode in Spokane and Missoula. I caught several rings on this ride. If you look closely at the Triceratops' horns you'll see some of them.
Another unique thing about this carousel is its stained-glass rounding boards, designed byMary Harris. The night we visited Helena, our itinerary said we were supposed to ride the carousel at 8:00,but the after-dinner speeches went on and on and on and on and on! It ended up being at least 8:30 when they finally let us out to ride the carousel. Some people were lucky enough to go ride the carousel as soon as we'd arrived in Helena, so they got to see it during day light hours. But some of us, myself included were lucky enough to keep riding the carousel again and again until closing time! Here we are!!Here are a couple extra horses, the Christmas horse and the hippocampus:
