Wolfie Blue-Tips I picked up by traveling with my family
![Picture](/uploads/4/4/4/8/4448415/849962.jpg)
Wolfie Blue's is an avid traveler and U.K. autism activist mother of soon to be five kids, one of whom is diagnosed with autism.
In her own words;
I'm a voice for Autism awareness!!
I have 4 children, each a character! One of my sons is non-verbal and Autistic :)
I grew up on travel/protest sites from aged 16.
I work as a fire performer and Autism awareness voice/activist.

"I think the more you travel with young children, the easier it gets!
This rule applies especially to Autistic children as they need to accept it as part of their routine.
Whether we stay in our big family tent or a hotel, there is bound to be stress, so the key is making it as "usual" as possible. My advice is: take a bag with favorite toys/books/blanket or even catalogues that your Autistic child favors, and try to pick the same hotel every time once you find one you like!
Never change the home routine so that if you usually read or watch something - take it with you.
If the child usually sleeps on the floor - let them!
Don’t make them change just because you are somewhere different.
Keep as calm as possible, even if everyone else isn't.
Hotels chains like "Travelodge" are ideal because all the rooms look the same and Autistic people love familiarity!
By picking the same hotel type your child will already know the layout of the room and
that will help calm them.
My son is four, and when we are on a long journey we take a pushchair for him to sit in, so he can sit in it until he feels comfortable enough with the hotel room to explore it.
I always explain to staff that we have a mentally disabled child with us (since saying "autism" usuallygets a blank stare, "mentally disabled" or "special needs" seems easier for people to understand) and that we would like to eat up in the room. We also mention at check in that we might take turns to comedown for breakfast. This depends on whether or not your child will eat - mine doesn't and taking him tocafes is a bit of a nightmare.
Buses, cars and trains are okay for us, as he just stares out of the window, but ferries are different – lots of space to run about!! Camden usually potters about the play area but if there isn't one he sits with us at the table, as long as there is a supply of "Thomas the tank engine" books he's okay for an hour or so.
Longer than that and you have to be prepared to catch him when he runs off to rearrange the shop shelves! I've not been brave enough to walk him on the deck, yet..
I generally pack like an army drill when I go anywhere, spare bottles, snacks and comforters, with as many children as I have(four and one on the way) including a severely Autistic child you can never be too prepared!
You can't predict their reactions or behaviors but you can be as prepared as possible for any meltdowns that might - and usually will - happen!!"
