Meet your room steward as soon as you can
Try to meet your room steward as soon as you possibly can after boarding the ship, since it will be necessary to make certain adjustments to your cabin. Be patient and courteous, and remember they are quite busy and tired, especially on embarkation days, when they wake up extremely early and have the difficult task of clearing the cabins and preparing them for next “batch” of travelers. After a brief introduction and the usual pleasantries exchange, ask him or her for the following;
The fridge/cooler in the room is to be cleared of all sodas, snacks, and alcohol. You need the space to store your own food and drinks that you will be bringing back from the buffet or dining room, as well as the items delivered by room service. Make sure your room fridge is well stacked, especially if your child is a “night snacker”.
Ask the steward to remove any small glass top tables, standing lamps, mirrors if possible and any other breakable objects that might go flying across the room during a violent tantrum. If you've asked for child-proofing or hypo-allergenic bedding, this is the time to check the room for any missing items or dangers. Ask for mattress covers and guard rails for the lower beds if they are available.
Check if you have enough seating in the cabin, so that your family members won't fight over the only chair available; in most cases, an extra one can be brought in if you ask for it. That extra chair might prove helpful as an additional door block if your young child needs to be stopped from exiting the room at night.
Ask for an extra remote cotrol if possible and block pay per view or porn channels accessible.
Most cabins have the possibility of separating the parents’ queen bed into two twins, so you might want the room steward to do that for you. Not only will it provide you with a slightly larger area to move about, but it also might be helpful if your young family members decide to play “musical beds” and switch beds with you in the middle of the night.If your family members like afternoon naps make sure you tell upour room steward you would like the beds ready 24/7 otherwise you might find your kid's sofa bed all made up .
If your globetrotter has “night accidents” in bed, ask for extra sheets, blankets, and towels as, chances are, that your globetrotter might need to take more than one bath/shower a day. It is much easier to get your supplies in the room before the “accidents” than to sit on the phone with guest services begging for the items in the middle of the night.
Last but not least, if your globetrotter is noise-sensitive, ask how to turn the room speaker volume off, so all those daily announcements don't bother him or her. Those announcements, ranging from reporting the ship's location to the next bingo tournament, can easily be heard by opening the cabin door or glancing at the daily newsletter the cruise line provides.
