What to do Munich
Munich is a fascinating city to explore; besides the Medieval City Gates that are still visible you should visit,Nymphenburg Palace with its incredible stagecoach collection, Marienplatz( the center town square), the tourist favorite Glockenspiel (Tower Cclock featuring 43 bells and 32 different figurines),The Rathaus,Konigplatz,Olympic village and English Gardens which is considered as one of the largest urban park in the world. For the avid sports fan-take a tour of Bayren Munichen soccer stadium For excellent shopping try theVictuals Market and don't forget the incredible Christmas Markets between the end of October and mid December every year. Munich is also a perfect 'home base' for day trips to the Romantic Road towns because of its central location. Food-don't leave without trying spatzele in a bier garten ,the famed bavarian pretzel in the English Gardens and a slice of apple pie (strudel) with vanilla sauce in Marienplatz while watching the Glockenspiel ! Dachau A visit to the Dachau concentaration camp is a an obligation to humanity of sorts.Allocate a few hours ,preferably in the morning before all the tour groups arrive and visit with your globetrotter.Walk through all the exhibits and the buildings to get a fair sense of what life must have been like for the prisoners. My kids were especially moved by seeing the tight bunk beds and bathrooms on the premises. . | AG's tipsThe biggest Munich disappointment was the Deutsche Museum that had every single item explained in German with no English translation. whatsoever. If you have your heart set to see the hour change in the Glockenspiel ,arrive at least ten minutes earlier to grab a decent standing spot. If you have your mind set on eating at the English Gardens ,remember the seating is basic ;shared long wooden benches,no cover from the possible sun and the usual amount of insects you might find out doors around food,so plan accordingly. Dachau is not recommended for the lower functioning autistic travelers unless they can be pretty quiet and patient for hours. If you have typical kids traveling with you ,consider splitting forces and have one parent stay with the autistic child while the other visits Dacau with the other child. |
