Q&A with Annette White-counselor at Camp Autism,Victoria.
Annette is a busy mother of two children, Holly and Bailey who was diagnosed at the age of three, with high functioning autism. She works as naturopath/deep muscle therapist part time typing medical reports ,as well as being involved in Camp Autism Inc.
Camp Autism Inc is an Australian based organization that provides a unique type of camp for autistic persons. The concept is to provide a respit camp that helps bond the family as a unit as well as provide a support group like setting in which parents share stories and discuss relevant issues pertaining to autism. So far ,Camp Autism Inc has camps in Queensland ,New South Wales , Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory .
For more information about this camp, check out their web site http://www.campautism.org/
A.G-: What made you decide to work with autistic people?
My son has just turned nine, he was diagnosed with HFA at 3 years of age. I was approached by the Queensland coordinators of Camp Autism Inc. to initiate similar camps in Victoria. All of the camp coordinators have a family member/s with autism, so we are aware of the families' specific needs and children's behaviors.
A.G: Describe a regular day for us, with its activities.
During our first camp day we start off with a pancake break, and ask everyone to bring their own toppings and drinks. It's a relaxed way for the families to chat and get to know each other.
Depending on the weather, we would organize craft activities inside or outdoor ball/poolside games. During our first camp it was a very wild and wet weekend, so we trekked around on my husband's school bus and found a cafe, sightseeing, and then to an indoor heated pool. Otherwise, we had planned our lunch and afternoon at the beach with beach games. On Saturday nights we always have a BBQ, again for some social time with a movie for the kids afterwards. We always aim to have at least 1 or 2 sessions for the parents to chat over coffee about parenting or behavioral issues, to make sure that everyone has support networks, or let them know where to source information if they need to do so.
A.G. How do you help kids with their fears of separation from their home and family/caregivers?
Since Camp Autism incorporates all family members, we don't have to deal with the stress of separation from the kids or their parents.
A.G Are these summers only programs, or do you have additional camp dates during other school vacations?
No, we try to organize camps when we have enough to attend at a particular venue; at this point we are having smaller groups every school holidays (x 4 in Australia). As the numbers of families wanting to come to camp grow in Victoria, we might book larger venues and then do between two to three times a year.
A.G. What was your best experience in the camp so far?
We feel that holidays for the whole family attending are important so that parents can network, as often they have not had any contact with other families in a similar situation. And the siblings have a chance to relax and make new friends as well. The best experience is to see the children with autism simply gravitate to each other and get along so well. There were no bad behaviors at all, and they all seem to sense that they are alike! This is a common theme to all camps!!
Thanks so much but I can't take credit for that at all, it was our founders, Mary & Bryan West, who did so and invited us into their lives and their dreams to help us help others too.
